Walnut Hills Students Excel at Overture Awards
The Overture Awards is a scholarship program developed to recognize, encourage and reward excellence in the arts among Tri-state students in grades 9-12. Its mission is to encourage arts education as an integral part of students' studies, and to create an environment that encourages training in, and appreciation of the arts.

This year Walnut's nominees were Rachel Wiers '08 (Instrumental), Natalie Rahn '08 (Instrumental), Chelsea Kurtz '07 (Theatre and Vocal), Katherine Walecka '07 (Creative Writing), Elizabeth Fittro '08 (Dance), Adam Petersen '07 (Instrumental), Spencer Hattemer '07 (Creative Writing), Jasmine Kornel '07 (Visual Art), Brooke Wade-Murphy '08 (Dance), Mary Margaret Fletcher '07 (Creative Writing), Spencer Viator '08 (Vocal), Michael Carr '07 (Theatre), and Rachel Spencer '07 (Visual Arts). On January 6 and January 7, the semi final competitions were held. The final competition was Saturday, February 24, 2007 at the Aronoff Center. Spencer Viator (Vocal) and Katherine Walecka (Creative Writing), were winners in their respective categories. This is the second year in a row that Katherine Walecka has won an Overture Award for Creative Writing. This is an amazing accomplishment. Congratulations to all the talented Walnut students.

Seven WHHS Students are Chosen as Finalists In the Nikon Photography Contest
Congratulations to the seven Walnut Hills finalists in the 27th Annual Student Photography Contest sponsored by Nikon. This is a great achievement for Walter Donica, Gabriell Frey, Katlyn Heath, Hannah Linser, Andy Meyer, Rachel Reberg and Andrew Schildknecht. These students were enrolled in Walnut Hills Photography classes instructed by Donald E. Stocker. All students competed nationally with 28,000 college students. Judges for this years contest were: Steve LaVoie, Art Center College of Design, Pasadens; Karen Sinsheimer, Curator of Photography, Santa Barbara Museum of Art; and Armando Flores, representing Nikon U.S.A.Their images will be published in the Best of College Photography Annual 2007.

Walnut Hills Recognized as a School of Distinction
The State of Ohio has recognized Walnut Hills High School as a School of Distinction for its high scores on State tests by all students, including students with disabilities.

Walnut Hills Varsity Girls Soccer Recapture Title
The Varsity Girls soccer team recaptured the FAVC Division Championship. Walnut held the trophy in 2004-2005 as part of the Buckeye Division. After realignment, Walnut is now in the Cardinal Division and has captured the first division championship in this new division. Congratulations to the team and to Coach Rod Fielden '90, Walnut alum.

Senior makes National Company
Michael Carr '07, has been selected for a supporting role in the school edition of the Broadway Musical Thoroughly Modern Millie, which will be performed in June at the Educational Theatre Association Conference. Michael is one of two students from Cincinnati and one of 48 nationwide chosen to gather in Kenosha, Wisconsin for three intensive rehearsals in March, May and June. Good luck Michael.
