2010 Reunion Recaps

Class of 1945 85th Birthday Party
On a June weekend, 76 years after graduation, 40 members of the Class of 1944 celebrated their 85th Birthday. All hale and hearty, they shared memories and current activities with a Skyline and Graeter's mixer, followed by a super brunch the next day. The committee of fifteen devoted class members, led by Fran Ahlering Brown, did an excellent job of coordinating the event. Plans were started for the ninetieth party in 2016.

The class was apprised of the progress of the renovation and additions to the school by Principal Jeff Brokamp '78. There was a round of applause at the news.

Because THE BEST PART OF THE PAST... IS PART OF OUR PRESENT, The Class of '49 was in agreement that they would like to celebrate their collective 80th Birthdays. So, the weekend of June 17th and 18th, 2011 was chosen and the planning began.

The reunion committee then put together a casual buffet dinner at Losantiville Country Club on the evening of the18th. An optional daytime lunch and tour of the historic and beautiful Taft Museum was included. The conclusion was a little mini Cincinnati 'stay-cation' among 50 high school friends.

All classmates were encouraged to send in a short paragraph about what is going on in their life these days and of course pictures welcomed. A video was put together to show that evening. Everyone was encouraged to... DO IT NOW, BEFORE YOU FORGET!!

Love,
THE CLASS OF '49

Class of 1950
My how time flies... became the theme as organizers planned the Class of 1950 Reunion.
What was happening then...
The Great Brinks Robbery - 11 thieves steal more than $2 million.
Jackie Robinson signs highest contract ($35,000) in Dodger history.
President Truman publicly announces development of H-bomb.
Peanuts by Charles M. Schulz first published
First broadcast of longest running game show "What's My Line."
Sen Joseph McCarthy charges State Dept infested with 205 communists.
Telephone Answering Machine created by Bell Laboratories.
Bob Hope's 1st TV appearance.
What's happened on May 21 & 22, 2010... classmates returned to Cincinnati and Walnut Hills in celebration of friendships formed over 60 years ago... and it seems like yesterday!
The weekend's events started with cocktails and dinner at the Cincinnati Marriott RiverCenter in the lovely gazebo. Saturday morning the class was schooled in the WHHS of today and tomorrow. WHHS Alumni Director Debbie Heldman and Principal Jeff Brokamp '78 shared the good news and exciting things happening all over the ever expanding campus. Next, golf or tennis anyone? And the grand finale celebration was held at the Losantiville Country Club.
It may have been 60 years, but the friendships span all time!

Class of 1960
The exhilaration of Labor Day weekend was the setting for this 50th Reunion extravaganza. The events opened with a bang at the Humana Center Building in Eden Park. Hosts Susie Graller Louiso and Judy Frieder Stern orchestrated a firecracker of a Meet and Greet bursting with nostalgic Cincinnati fare including Big Boys and Graeter's. Sunday morning classmates rocketed back to Blaire Circle for a tour of the WHHS campus of today. Touring the halls of WHHS brought back an explosion of memories of years gone by. The evening's celebration aboard The Belle of Cincinnati put the Class of 1960 front and center for Cincinnati's premier pyrotechnic show. The Rozzi's Famous Fireworks offered a fitting backdrop while reminiscing with old friends and flames. Jack and Mary Bob Rubenstein served as hosts of the grand finale farewell brunch at Losantiville Country Club. The Class of 60 50th Reunion weekend by all accounts was a dazzling success.

The Class of '60 Class Gift, in honor of the 50th reunion, will be equally astounding. Classmates opted to provide the seed money to establish the WHHS Alumni Endowment Fund. This fund will help to sustain, enhance, and provide a cushion for current and future challenges. The committee has set an ambitious goal of $150,000. The Alumni Foundation will also use this seed money as a beacon and inspiration for other classes and individuals to follow. These contributions will enable us continue the legacy of excellence for students of today and tomorrow.

Reflections from Susie and Jack on our WHHS 50th reunion

The reunion weekend.... wow! I think it is safe to say "A good time was had by all." As I reflect back on that incredible weekend, I'd like to share my thoughts. Prior almost all of my thoughts about Walnut Hills were my memories of school days. That has now changed; no longer are there cliques, no longer are there racial injustices, no longer are there stereotypes, no longer is there bullying, no longer does it matter how many cashmere sweaters one has, no longer is there sexual repression (thank goodness!), no longer does it matter who is the most popular or best looking....the list is endless.

Instead, there is respect and admiration and a genuine concern for one another—no matter who you are. We came to realize that for some reason we were all part of this amazing school, and we will be connected forever. My only regret is that it took 50 years to verbalize it. This school gave us tools to navigate our lives and to do it in style. How fortunate we were—and are. I, for one, will support Walnut Hills as long as I am able to so that other youngsters have the same advantages we did.

I am so sorry that everyone couldn't have been at the reunion to experience this phenomenon. Someone said, "At our age we should be having reunions every two years!" Well, I am already working on the class of '60 turns 70. It will probably be the first weekend in October, 2012. Put it on your calendar.

Thank you, again, to everyone who worked on the committee and to everyone who attended.
Susie Graller Louiso

Being back at school on Sunday morning and seeing old familiar places was very nostalgic, but listening to Principal Jeff Brokamp and Alumni Director Debbie Heldman talk about the $65,000,000.00 renovation, that is already underway, really got me excited.

What a great future our school has. Clearly, we are the shining example of the Cincinnati Public Schools, and it gave me great pride to hear about our future.

I would urge each of you to contribute to our class gift to support the endowment, which underwrites many of the extras that the Board of Education cannot afford. We have received a number of gifts in the $5,000.00 to $25,000.00 range, and we hope to raise over $100,000.00. Every contributions counts.

Don't miss the next reunion. It will be another fabulous time.
Jack Rubenstein

Class of 1965
The 'Everything Old is New Again' reunion gave classmates 65+ great reasons to attend their 45th Reunion.
• The $65 million building and renovation of the Walnut Hills campus has begun!
• '65 classmate Grant Hesser, is heading the WHHS Facilities Committee.
• Learn details of the renovation and addition of 65,000+ square feet of space.
And come they did on Saturday, September 11, 2010. First classmates toured the WHHS campus and learned 65 ways the Walnut Hills of today is thriving. Then lite bites and libations were on tap during a casual evening among friends at the home of Bill '65 and Sally Fee.

Class of 1970
'70 WHHS classmates were rollin' on the river September 24-26, 2010 for their 40th Reunion. On the Kentucky banks, you could see the good side of the city from Newport on the Levee's Claddagh Irish Pub. Here, classmates mixed and mingled without a worry about the way things might have been. Saturday morning Alum never lost a minute of sleep, up early to tour the Walnut Hills campus and hear from Principal Jeff Brokamp '78. Saturday evening, if you came down to the river, to the Theodore M. Berry International Friendship Park, you found dinner and dancing 'coz people on the river are happy to be among old friends. The 40th Reunion weekend kept rollin' rollin' rollin' on Sunday morning. Classmates could hitch a ride to the home of Judi and Dan Cohen where friends gathered for a farewell brunch. This reunion will go down in history as a classic!

Class of 1975
Celebrating 35 years since they walked the halls, September 24, 2010 marked the return of the Class of 1975 to Walnut Hills. Here, the class launched the Jack Jones '44 Memorial Lecture Series.

Mr. Jones was a Black Cultural Social Studies teacher and varsity basketball coach who suffered a fatal hear attack while playing basketball with his friends, he was twenty seven years old. During the five years at Walnut Hills, Jack was an around-the-clock teacher, coach, and friend. He dedicated himself to the school's academics and athletics. The Class of 1975's sponsorship of this rousing assembly was a fitting means of honoring Mr. Jones. Current students and '75 classmates were entertained by speaker and alum, Steve Tracy '72. Steve is a professor of Afro-American Studies at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Steve has author many books and journals and is an accomplished jazz musician and recording artist who plays a mean harmonica. Professor Tracy is considered an expert in the field of African-American literature and the blues.

As part of the Jack Jones Lecture Series, Steve spoke to several AA English classes taught by Samantha Gerwe-Perkins discussing Black Boy and Bluest Eye, the Music Theory class taught by Kerry Kruze, and also joined fellow harmonica player Blake Taylor's AP Literature and Comp class to discuss "A Dream Deferred: How the myth of the American Dream affects Urban America", touching briefly on Jazz and Blues culture during the Harlem Renaissance.

Friday evening, classmates took in a football game, Walnut Hills VS Winton Woods, and then... it was Skyline Time, downtown on 4th Street. The merriment was contagious as the Class of '75 celebrated friendships and ask themselves... when was the last time you laughed so hard you cried?

Class of 1985
It was a labor of love as Terez Mays Jones and the Class of 1985 planned their 25th reunion, Labor Day Weekend 2010. Friday, September 3rd it was all fun and games as our eagles flocked to Newport on the Levee's GamesWorks. What a fun way to reconnect with friends and kick off an exciting reunion weekend. Saturday morning the class gathered as they did so many years ago, in Blair Circle for a tour of WHHS. Saturday night the 'Cosmopolitan Chic' reunion theme rocked the Kingsgate Marriott until the wee hours of the morning. Sunday was off the hook at classmate Paula Tojo-Hensley's farm. Games, a pig roast, swimming, family, and friends... what a perfect way to close out the reunion fun.

Class of 1990
Friday, August the 13th brought good luck to the Class of 1990 as they kicked off their 20 year reunion. The party started at "entertainment central," Dave & Buster's. The invitation was to get reacquainted and "escape into play," kids of all ages were welcome! Going back to where it all began was the Saturday morning charge. The Alumni Foundation guided the Class through the hallways, old and new, while the class reminisced, looked for former lockers and hangouts, and heard what's happening now. The festivities took a formal turn Saturday evening as classmates gathered at Receptions Banquet Center. Organizers Sharon Bronson and David Alford planned a night of dining and dancing the class will remember for years to come.

Class of 2000
They may be young, but the Class of 2000 alumni were up for the reunion challenge Labor Day Weekend, 2010. A hundred energetic classmates and spouses headed to the 'WARM UP' Friday, September 3rd at the Funny Bone Comedy Club. The comedy on stage and off, set the tone for this fun and games weekend with friends. Saturday's main event found classmates partying like it's... 2000... at Molly Malone's. Sunday afternoon the party arrived at WHHS where classmate toured the school and heard about the WHHS of today. Reunion organizers, led by Joshua Hardin and Bridget Hall, created a family friendly carnival atmosphere, complete with games, face painting, and treats for the kids (of all ages).

The WHHS Class of 1944, Stimulus Package Reunion!
The Class of 1944 did their part to stimulate the economy and reunion attendance by designing an action packed weekend. The weekend of June 26 & 27, 2009 classmates gathered to celebrate an amazing 65 years of friendship!

Friday morning, the first class coach pulled out of Blair Circle destined for the Toyota Plant Tram Tour. The transportation, provided by a generous classmate, allowed these spry classmates a luxury journey to Georgetown, KY for the noon tour. A tram transported classmates around the huge plant. The guided tour pointed out various departments where raw materials are processed through a modern assembly line to the finished car. Many robots are used for efficiency and quality, as well as driverless trains to deliver sub-assemblies to installers. Toyota uses a minimum of 70% American content in every car, and has a work force of over 95% Americans, mostly from the Blue Grass State. We recommend this plant tour to all our alumni friends. The next stop was lunch on the campus of Georgetown College. It was a stimulating full day by the time they returned to WHHS.

Saturday evening, classmates assembled for the WHHS Class of 1944 Reunion Dinner. Embers Gourmet Restaurant was the perfect setting to spark conversation, an address by class president Rabbi Jack Stern, and comments by many. Principal Jeff Brokamp '78 was in attendance and delivered an inspiring update of the school's continued progress and growth... Many of us wondered if we could handle the current high standards of our alma mater!

It was a cherished evening made possible by a dedicated reunion committee. As in many previous reunions, hats were tipped to Fran Ahlering Browne who led the committee to pull off a perfect reunion. We look forward to the next one, 70th, Wow!

Class of 1979
Are you ready to party like it's 1979? That was the question posed to classmates as Sean Mullaney and the reunion committee planned their 30th Reunion. On June 19 & 20, 2009, the answer was a resounding YES! Enthusiastic classmates returned to Cincinnati and WHHS in huge numbers. Eager to recapture a blast from their past, what better way than to start the weekend at Skyline on 4th street? Coneys and conversation flowed into the wee hours. Saturday morning, the halls of WHHS came alive with voices from years past. Classmates retraced their steps and peeked into the crevices from the library to the salt mines. Known to many, Jeff Brokamp '78 was again in the house... but this time as the Principal. Jeff brought classmates up to date on the WHHS of today. Saturday evening classmates did party like it was 1979 to 70's music and a photo montage. A great time was had by all... and a huge thank you goes out to the committee for recreating the excitement of years gone by.
