LONG RANGE GOALS
2002 - 2007
The Long Range Plat will serve both as the school's One Plan and the background for the North Central Association's School Improvement Endorsement. Over the next five yews goals in the curriculum and teaching areas will be handled by the ILT. Goals in the Facility Enhancement and Marketing areas will be bandied by constituent committees and will report to the MT. Goals in the support services will be handled by the guidance department and will report to the ILT. Progress will be reported to the LSDMC twice each school year.
GOALS:
CURRICULUM
- Strengthen the AP Program by adding additional AP courses, expanding clientele, and increasing vertical communication among feeder classes,
- Ensure that all courses contain the challenge necessary for superior college preparation.
- Provide a better teaming environment by improving the teacher-student ratio.
- Continually select and purchase textbooks, classroom equipment and materials to ensure that academic needs are met.
- Provide common curricular experiences and evaluation within individual courses that prepare students to meet or exceed established state, district, and WHHS standards.
- Refine standards for oral and written communication for each grade level that include the systematic study of vocabulary, grammar and mechanics.
- Establish courses and expand curricula to prepare students to be contributing members of the world-wide society.
- Ensure that students and staff are proficient in using technologies and educational and communication resources.
- Increase critical thinking as a component of all academic courses.
- Continue to improve library resources and integrate the use of the library into the curriculum.
- Increase writing within all disciplines.
TEACHING
- Institute a program of staff development that concentrates on effective teaching methods and classroom management.
- Increase communications early with parents and students to implement corrective measures for academic improvement.
- Emphasize the value of mutual respect between school personnel and students for an improved school culture.
FACILITIES ENHANCEMENT
- Prioritize remaining facility repairs and match with resource support (e.g., Cincinnati Public Schools, WaIrrut Hills High School Association, Alumni Foundation, Fund Raisers) in a project schedule beginning in 2002.
- Identify and prioritize major capital projects to bring the entire Walnut Hills High School facility up to the "world class" standard set by the new arts and science center.
MARKETING, COMMUNICATIONS AND RECOGNITION
- Continue marketing and communications campaign to heighten awareness of Walnut Hills' success and opportunities on a local, state and national level.
- Expand the opportunities for recognizing and rewarding students and staff for significant contributions leading to innovation and excellence in performance.
- Provide for yearly evaluation from the "stakeholder" groups (alumni, parents, teachers, students and staff) to assess progress and communicate results to Walnut Hills constituencies.
- Provide feeder schools with the academic expectations integral to student success in a college preparatory program,
- To stimulate improved extra curricular and parent programs, issue surveys to participants of existing activities and programs.
SUPPORT SERVICES
- Improve strategies for counselor communication among students, staff, and parents.
- Continue to improve the services provided by the College Information Center.
- Improve the staffing of health and wellness/welfare services.
- Evaluate and improve the study skills program to provide academic and social assistance to seventh grade students experiencing difficulty.
1998 LONG RANGE PLAN FINAL REPORT

With increased expenditures and the collaborative work of many, improvements in both program and facilities have evolved over the past few years. Thanks to Bill Kern '54, our alumnus strategic planning consultant, who keeps us focused on the expectations and opportunities we have at Walnut Hills High School.
In 1998, the LSDMC commissioned a Long Range Plan for Walnut Hills High School. During the past four years, action committees staffed by faculty, administration, alumni, parents and students have worked to implement various facets of the plan. This document sets forth the accomplishments under this original plan.
PLAN ACCOMPLISHMENTS:
The original plan contained 95 "action items" divided among several areas of concentration. Significant progress has been made on 76 of those items, or an 80% accomplishment rate. The highlights are:
CURRICULUM
- AP Program - maintained a leadership position providing Advanced Placement courses in variety and quality.
- College Board Awards - 119 in '99, 125 in '00 and 123 in '01.
- Common Exams - instituted in departments working toward consistently high standards in all levels of the curriculum.
- Required Writing - English, Latin, Math, Science and Social Studies reported 42 specific writing requirements/projects now in the curriculum.
- Modern Technology - is being integrated in science, i.e., MeasureNet R in Chemistry, college level software in Physics and Biology. Provided laptops for 30 faculty members, increased staff development, added graphic design studio, digital cameras in Photography, LCD panels, an electron microscope, weather satellite, language lab, and upgraded 2 instruction labs. Purchased additional software for all disciplines.
- Library Resources Improved - 27 computers (16 with Internet access, 3 w/Pentium, and more powerful server). Two full-time librarians and one aide. Web page with 7 web-based resources. Student usage has doubled.
- Course Evaluation - course evaluations now being used in some classes to elicit recommendations from students and parents.
- New Courses - added to improve the quality of the curriculum, i.e., Engineering, Discrete Math, Environmental Science and Creative Writing: Poetry.
Summer School - meeting Walnut Hills standards implemented on RITSS campus.
TEACHING
- Early Warning - a computerized mid-term reporting system was put in place to ensure earlier notice to students/parents in cases of low academic performance.
- Full-Time Study Skills Instructional Assistant - added to staff. Students assigned by need basis.
- Teaching Methods - twenty teachers report using a wider variety of methodology including group work, films, peer editing, simulation games, Socratic method, drama, panels, computer simulation, laser discs, and role-playing.
COUNSELING
- Increased Staff - ILT added one counselor for 2001-2002, bringing the total to five.
- College Information Center - in fourth year of operation, providing an effective planning resource for students/parents.
- Psychologist - Full-time staff member is now ongoing, providing effective psychological support for students, staff and parents.
- Study Skills Program - added to seventh grade curriculum for students identified by need. Program functions in cooperative effort with Cincinnati Youth Collaborative. Includes three full-time Youth Advocates.
FACILITIES ENCHANCEMENT
- World Class Arts & Science Center - $11.5 million project - new facility opened in fall of 1999. Staff development and technology enhancements are ongoing.
- Auditorium Renovation - $1.1 million face-lift of the auditorium, including a new lobby, stylized "WH" seating, modernized lighting, and sound system, fresh paint, carpeting and air conditioning - completed Fall of 2001.
- Copper Dome Replaced - and exterior and interior refurbishing of the library by the Board of Education.
- Original Building Upgrade - New roof, painting and Blair road repairs, as well as a complete upgrading of the fire/safety alarm system by the Board of Education.
MARKETING, COMMUNICATIONS & RECOGNITION
- Increased Publicity - on school's achievements by Alumni Foundation & Parent Board. "Under The Dome" - weekly guide to life at Walnut Hills.
- Web Page - up and running).
- Recruiting/Promotion - exciting video produced to attract quality students as well as support. Feeder schools targeted with invitations to musicals, open houses and tours. "Family" of recruiting materials created.
- New Partnerships - Ohio State, Cincinnati Opera, N.K.U., as well as increased participation by U.C. and Federated.
- New Alumni Chapters - Boston & Phoenix, newest groups, bringing the total to eight chapters nation-wide.
- Ad-hoc City Realtor Initiative - helped form a new information group to improve image of Cincinnati school system.
- On-Site Testing - developed with CPS a more client oriented testing atmosphere.
- Award/Recognition - increased faculty recognition through creation of Golden Apple Awards and Class of 1946 Faculty Awards. For student achievements, expanded senior awards program, instituted Science Fair Awards, Advanced Placement Studio Art Showcase, and National Merit/Commended semi-finalist photo display.
- Scholarship - expanded alumni scholarship opportunities. Total is now 34 scholarships/awards for graduating seniors.
