The diverse group of 25 judges represented graduates from the 1930s through the 1990s and were scattered around the country. When they sent their ballot selections in, many judges indicated they were pleasantly overwhelmed by the accomplishments of the nominees and the task of selecting just 20 individuals. Several said that it was a most difficult and humbling experience to participate in the process. We thank each of them for their contributions. Walnut Hills Holds Tenth Annual Gabriel C. E. Robinson Alumni Basketball Tournament On Saturday, February 3, 2007, the Alumni Foundation hosted the 10th Annual Gabriel C. E. Robinson Alumni Basketball Tournament. The evening began in grand style with the National Anthem sung by Gabe's father, Jackie Robinson. The first contest featured WHHS Odd year alum versus WHHS Even year alum. It was a barnburner! The even years pulled out a victory in the closing seconds with a win of 46 to 43. The next game was a Mixed Nutsgame with our talented faculty, featuring Gabe's dad, Jackie Robinson, versus a team of current WHHS seniors who were confident they would take the faculty to school. Much to their chagrin, it was the other way around with the faculty giving their students quite a lesson with their 37 to 27 victory. The evening's final contest was between the All Star Bengals and the WIZ 101.1/BUZZ 1230 AM All-Stars. This game was also a nailbiter until the very end. The All StarBengals pulled it out in the end with a 55 to 53 win with just seconds left to play. During halftime, Gabe Robinson's jersey was officially retired by Athletic Director, Lynne Harris and Gabe Robinson's parents addressed the audience. The past recipients of the Gabriel C. E. Robinson Memorial Scholarship that were in attendance were introduced. All proceeds from the evening benefit the Gabriel C.E. Robinson Memorial Scholarship which is awarded to 3 Walnut Hills students every spring. Last year's winners were Cierra Pryor, Lacey Rogers and Marcus Willliams. YOUNG ALUMNI HOLIDAY GET TOGETHER On January 2, 2007, from 11:00am-1:00pm the Alumni Foundation held a get together with bagels and coffee for young alum to come back and visit with each other and their former teachers. Current students did not return to class until the following day so young alum have a chance to wander around and visit their favorite faculty as well as catch up with old friends. ALUMNI TENNIS CHALLENGE The 9th annual Alumni Tennis Challenge was held Friday September 29, 2006 at the Ridge Club. Once again current varsity and junior varsity took on players from the bygone days in an attempt to halt the alumni's 8 year winning streak. Unfortunately for the current students the alumni once again pulled off a stunning 76 to 42 victory. There's always next year. Walnut Hills Dedicates Its New Track and Stadium In Style The new Robert S. Marx Stadium and William DeHart Hubbard Track were dedicated on Friday, September 1, 2006. The stadium was named after Robert S. Marx, class of 1906. The Marx Trust funded the school's upgraded home field in 1979 with a $120,000 gift believed to be the largest ever given to the public schools. Marx played football for WHHS. From Walnut Hills, Marx went on to the University of Cincinnati College of Law and became an attorney and Superior Court judge. He founded the Disabled American Veterans and started the Marx Law Lectures at UC and the Marx Invitational Debate Tournaments at Xavier University. In addition to many other bequests, major projects of the trust were the Robert S. Marx Law Library at UC and the Robert S. Marx Theater in the Playhouse in the Park. William DeHart Hubbard, WHHS 1921, played football, baseball and competed in gymnastics and track while maintaining an excellent academic average. He won a scholarship to the University of Michigan where he broke several track records and tied the world records for the 100- and 600-yard dashes. In 1960, he was voted one of the 10 greatest athletes in U. of M. history. At the 1924 Paris Olympics, he won the Gold Medal in the long jump competition. DeHart Hubbard was the first African-American to win an individual Olympic Gold Medal. The 2,000 seat all-weather football/soccer field and 8-lane track were funded and constructed by Cincinnati Public Schools as part of its Facilities Master Plan. Michael Burson is the Director of Facilities for CPS. Michael Schuster Associates, Inc., served as architects. Opening Ceremonies began with the Parade of Current and Alumni Athletes, the National Anthem, and the WHHS Alumni Marching Band followed by the dedication. Master of Ceremonies, Grant Hesser '65, introduced the Honorary Chairs: Darren Anderson '87, WHHS Athletic Hall of Fame, former NFL Kansas City Chiefs player. Mary Danner Wineberg '98, WHHS, UC, and Olympic track star. Ranked 5th in US in 4-by-400 relay. Torie Hesser Schellhas '93, WHHS and UK soccer standout, current community soccer coach. Following the Honorary Chairs, current and alumni participants in the parade represented coaches, cheerleading, cross country, football, golf, soccer, tennis, track, class representatives, dance team, drum line, and the Blue & Gold Corps. To conclude the parade, the WHHS Alumni Marching Band joined the Marching Blue and Gold for the Fight Song and the National Anthem. For the pre-game dedication and presentation, Grant Hesser introduced David Dierker, Cincinnati Public Schools Director of Athletics. Mr. Dierker commented on the collaborative efforts between CPS and Walnut Hills in the stadium endeavor and acknowledged Mike Burson, CPS Director of Facilities. He then presented the evening's game ball to WHHS Principal Marvin Koenig. Mary Danner Wineberg'98 was introduced and spoke about DeHart Hubbard and his accomplishments. She presented a bronze plaque honoring Mr. Hubbard to Mr. Koenig. Mr. Koenig thanked the presenters and turned the game ball over to Coach Steve Brogden '89 for the WHHS Eagles vs. Ross Rams game. At the half-time performance, the Walnut Hills Marching Blue & Gold, directed by Ed LeBorgne, showcased their new uniforms. Generous support from alumni, parents, friends, and the community provided funding for the uniforms. The band continues to receive superior performance ratings and has a reputation for excellence at both the regional and state levels. The stadium flag was flown over the United States Capitol on January 24, 2006 at the request of the Honorable Jean Schmidt, Member of Congress. The flag was flown for the dedication of the new Walnut Hills Robert S. Marx Stadium.
